Well done. I saw the Smith and Wire, but not from such a thorough perspective. And the reminders of the fate of the Towers one senses in the Wire film, probably have a peculiar resonance for New Yorkers, The context of risk in all the films interests me, and makes the threesome fit in some strong way.

[...] As mentioned before, Sam Miguel’s colonial atmosphere and architecture is protected by federal regulations but it does have all the modern technology you are used to. All of this is surrounded by what may be more charm than you can handle. [...]

I loved this article because I see it happening every day in San Miguel.
People having fun working together (adults and children), as we used to
do in the US. I can't wait to live permanently in this beautiful quaint

Dear Signe,

Just had a quick run-through some of the Zeitgeist
(I'm short of zeit --and geist, too)
Enjoyed the musings on music
(many of the names were familiar to me.)

The Bernie Madoff story is of course now quite advanced since December. Martin Smith did a powerful Frontline piece for PBS the other night. I'm sure you could find it on PBS.org (--if you have both zeit and geist.)
I wrote quite a bit about him in my blog (--again, if you have the Z/G...)

Nice to hear from you,
Malachi

Very funny about the child labor laws. Maybe part of the appeal of the story is simple nostalgia. What kid of a certain age doesn't remember riding a bicycle without a helmet or sitting in the back of a pickup with the dog? We've done a great job of making our lives safer en el Norte, maybe a little too safe.

[...] Well, no. Actually, we’re the ones who experience these things. The Dow drops, and we experience dismay, fear, a sinking feeling in the pit of our stomach. Cable service is disrupted, the train is delayed, and we experience frustration, or worse. Read on… [...]
